It was designed to inflict physical damage on an opponent at close range. There was also a smaller version that could be held in one hand.
A bola had 2 long cords, weighted at the end. It was used,one handed, by being whirled around the head and then hurled over a distance at an opponent. The weighted cords would wrap around an opponent, either disabling or bringing him down.You could then close in for and easy kill or capture.
