Query by Mandy: Why was the western facade of churches in medieval architecture much more produced?
Why was the western facade of churches in medieval architecture much more produced than the other individuals? Was it selected for an entrance for a purpose? I know there is a specif cause the churches were aligned so that the entrance faced the west, but I just can’t bear in mind!

Simply because the western facade typically (as in 99 percent) was the entrance.
The explanation for this is easy: The most holy spot, the altar faced towards the east – towards Jerusalem the most holy location of chrisianity. and the support was turned in the direction of the east (mass was not stated in the path of the people visiting the services until finally the 2nd vatican coucil in the 1970s).

And of training course the entrance is opposite the most holy location for sensible explanation (as in seing the altar when enterring, propper aproaching it with respect,…)

A couple of things to remember concerning medieval towns:Sewage ran down the middle of the streets in a canal, channel, or conduit, if the town was prosperous the canal was traversed by strategically placed bridges, if not then you jumped or stepped over. The walled were usually constructed with two sides of rocks and inside was refuse, trash, dirt, etc. Most of the buildings were constructed of wood and the roofs were thatched. The keep, the area inside the castle, was used for the serfs to come to in the case of an attack. The buildings were built narrow and with steeply sloping roofs and against the inside walls of the city to buttress them in the case of attack. There are some sources listed below on construction …Hope this helps …
