Question by Eric: How many miles did medieval armies march in a day?
On average, how many miles would a medieval army march in a day, and for how many hours would they march?

Also, separate question: How many miles/hours could a person go on a horse in a day at an average speed (slow enough so that the horse won’t get worn out will always be ready to ride the next day)?

Thanks!

Armies then marched about 8-10 miles a day. They marched all day. I think horses could double that.

Hello there, I want to do some investigation on clothes that folks wore each in the medieval time period (Europeans) and/or in the course of the ancient days, like throughout the kingdoms of babylon, persia, etc. I’ve checked wikipedia, but they will not present good photographs, and other websites aren’t very informative. Any very good sites?

Issue by Ello, I am Sarah.: What course would a medieval headsman be in?
Like nobles, serfs, ect?
By the way, a headsman is a individual in Medieval Europe that would complete executions.

Reply by Sybaris
“By and big, executioners have not been personages of noble rank and title. In reality virtually every single society has counted them among the lowest of the reduced. True, there have been dynasties of headsmen in France and hangmen in Britain, a kind of parallel aristocracy wherever the first-born inherited the mantle of workplace from his father alongside with a specific dignity that goes with it, but most executioners have come from the very same ranks as the criminals they executed and the policement who enforced the laws – that is to say, from the reduce-center class and working lessons. Their functions could have been crucial – few much more so – but they have been hardly dignified officers of the court. Pariahs, every one of them.

From the initial, beheading was reserved for offenders of rank… For some reason … it has always been the belief in western Europe that beheading was more honourable than hanging or strangulation.

The names of quite few headsmen have come down to us. We know that they had been stored hectic from medieval moments throught the Tudors and Stuarts, but although they were all proficient in their perform, handful of insinuated their names into background. Cratwell, who was passed over for a foreigner in the situation of Anne Boleyn, was himself hanged two years afterwards for stealing… Typical of most headsmen of his time, Cratwell probably came out of the criminal courses and descended again into them.

In Shakespeare’s time [rather afterwards than you needed] the hangman/headsman had to hang as well as decapitate. He also had to be capable to brand name, nip, flog, burn up, rack, gibbet, disembowel and quarter.”

The over is from “Lord Higher Executioner” by Howard Engel.
